Meta: Match dog toys to size and chewing strength for safer, longer-lasting play.
The wrong toy can be too small to be safe or too hard for your dog’s teeth. Two things matter most: size and chew style.
Size
- Small dogs: light toys they can carry, such as small plush toys and soft balls.
- Medium dogs: medium rubber toys and sturdy fetch toys.
- Large dogs: big, thick toys that can’t fit at the back of the mouth.
Chew style
- Gentle chewers: plush toys, soft rubber, tennis-style balls.
- Moderate chewers: durable rubber and nylon-style chews.
- Power chewers: thick, solid rubber toys made for heavy chewing.
How to use this
- Watch how your dog plays for a few days. Do they carry, shake, shred or gnaw?
- Pick toys that suit that style.
- Start with one new toy at a time, so you can see how your dog handles it.
- Check toys weekly for cracks, tears and missing pieces.
Safety tip: if a toy can be swallowed whole, or breaks into small pieces, replace it with a larger or tougher one. Always supervise new toys.
