Pet Toy Safety Checklist: What to Check Before You Buy

Meta: A quick checklist for safer toys.

Not every toy is safe for every pet. Use this checklist.

Before you buy

  • Right for the species: a dog toy isn’t a hamster toy.
  • Right size: too small is a choking risk, too big can be hard to use.
  • Materials: well made, with no strong chemical smell.
  • Parts: no small pieces, buttons, loose eyes or long strings.
  • Instructions: read any age or size guidance.

When you get it home

  1. Inspect it, pulling gently on seams and attachments.
  2. Introduce it with supervision.
  3. Watch how your pet plays. Do they chew it apart?
  4. Store strings, feathers and other risky items out of reach.

Regular checks

  • Look for cracks, tears, rust and loose parts weekly.
  • Replace worn toys right away.

Stop using a toy if: it breaks into pieces, has sharp edges, or your pet swallows parts.

If your pet swallows a toy or shows signs of distress, contact a vet immediately.
