Meta: Pick the right wheel size and type for your hamster.
A wheel is a hamster’s main exercise tool, but the wrong size can hurt their back.
What to look for
- Size: general guidance is a larger wheel for larger hamsters. Syrian hamsters usually need a bigger wheel (often around 11 to 12 inches) than dwarf hamsters (often around 8 inches or more). Your hamster’s back should stay straight when running.
- Surface: solid running surface, not bars or wire rungs, which can trap feet.
- Stability: a firm base that doesn’t wobble.
- Noise: quiet, smooth-spinning bearings.
How to use it
- Place the wheel on a flat spot in the cage.
- Make sure there’s room above the wheel, so your hamster doesn’t hit the roof.
- Let your hamster discover it on their own, as they usually run at night.
- Clean the surface weekly with a damp cloth.
Safety tips
- If your hamster arches its back while running, the wheel is too small.
- Avoid wire wheels.
- Check for cracks or damage regularly.
Sizes vary by species, so check the product details and ask a vet or experienced keeper if unsure.
